HOMESTEAD BY THE SEA More than sixty years before the homestead
witnessed seven thousand ships on its sea
and troops landing to liberate, troops dead,
it crouched behind pear-shaped haystacks, daily
watching a farmer between wars. And he,
revered the peach haze, his quiet cliff life,
the broody skies, wildflowers, the wildlife,
self-sufficient despite the homestead’s size.
He dug potatoes for his Normand wife

rests, and listens. Humming overheard,
imbued with sweetness. Red passionflower. The hummingbird,

deflects from the beauty of jewelled seeds’

dress, a corona caress, outdone however –

THE HARVESTERS
In August harvest, in the heat of the day
shade was scarce. We shared our rye bread and drank beer
flavoured with herb gruit. We savoured the way
a pottage of carrots and turnips appeared
a feast with salted meat or herring. We lay
replete, as the wheat was reaped and gathered near-
by, to be taken by cart to town. Like hay,
our skins dried and browned. Some of us lived freer,
swimming unclothed, in the pond. And at end day
we went home to eat porridge, fish, bread and beer. ©elsp 2025

look at those stalks so very crisp and green
feed me to your children, they want me so why bread and cake and pies and all that dough
get glamor treatment, while i’m rarely seen?

my spears, redemption for the hungry lean

FOR THE PEOPLE WAITING Who like gap-toothed melons
forget to call champagne sparkling wine
can’t choose between red, white or black grapes
like a squeeze of lemon with everything
Who think strawberries wear hats
imagine cherries as fish roe
ate too many apricots once
value melons, pineapples and berries as antioxidants
Who ate berry pancakes today at lunch with a friend
ate lunch alone
ate no lunch
didn’t feel like much anyway
Who couldn’t leave the house
cuddled a baby after her first haircut
planned a wedding
ordered flowers for a funeral
Who went to work on the bus
couldn’t watch the news
couldn’t get enough news
doom-scrolled on social media
Who made money on the markets
worried about lost opportunities
worried about an ultrasound
couldn’t afford the dentist
Who ran through the mountains
swam with seals
pilgrimaged in Spain
didn’t travel anywhere
Who put money on the lottery
slept fitfully on the couch
streamed the latest on TV
watched six pelicans fly in formation
Who felt life was passing them by
tried something new
argued with a loved one
Who hurt Here is a drink to your life, a feast for your replenishment.
Your heart is an egg in a nest.

We pressed sweated by day
Bolder, bolder
We rode wrote painted talked

Night and day we drank talked
Haze, haze
