My mother-in-law was a big fan of ginger, and always had some crystallised ginger in the pantry. Ginger Jar is written with her in mind. I remember her elsewhere on this website, too, specifically through her foolproof casserole, which has never failed me, and her date loaf, which has never failed me either. I’m sure she has a gingerbread recipe somewhere amongst her favourites, which I must find and try to replicate one day.
More of my ekphrastic poetry here. The form is a cheuh-chu.

Ginger Jar
if you were alive
I’d buy ginger jars
fill your shelves with them
rhizomes your memoirs
fresh for longer health
candied reservoirs
pickled for less pain
ground for bread and bars
