Oranges and Goblet of Wine

A lovely detail about this painting is that there’s an inscription on the back by the artist’s daughter, Helen Peto Smiley, that simply reads, “Painted by my father”. It makes it even more relevant that I’m using it on a website inspired by my daughter. As for the painting, I was inspired by its quiet reverence.

I seem to be drawn to Peto’s paintings, as I have a few other poems in response to them: Pub Bench, and Old Partner. There’s an intensity with which he truly sees his subject that I like.

I wrote the words to this poem, in these line breaks, before I even considered making it a shape. Some interesting examples of shape and concrete poetry here. More of my ekphrastic poetry here.
